Consul Support Policy

HashiCorp generally supports the current and previous minor release with security patches. There is no formal LTS program for Consul. Enterprise customers get extended support through HashiCorp contracts.

What You Need to Know

Consul moved to the BSL license in August 2023. Evaluate whether this impacts your usage.

Consul Dataplane (replacing client agents) simplifies the deployment model significantly. Use it for new service mesh deployments.

Consul 1.17+ includes native support for Envoy as a sidecar proxy with automatic config generation.

For simple service discovery without the mesh, consider lighter alternatives like DNS-based discovery or etcd.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often does Consul release new versions?
Consul ships minor versions every 3-4 months with patch releases as needed. The pace is consistent but there's no fixed monthly schedule.
Is Consul still open source?
Consul uses the Business Source License (BSL) since August 2023. You can use it freely for most purposes, but it restricts competing managed service offerings. If BSL is a concern, evaluate alternatives.
How do I upgrade Consul?
Consul supports rolling upgrades within the same major version. Upgrade servers first, then clients. Always back up your data directory and check the upgrade guide for breaking changes between your current and target versions.
