Envoy Version History

4 active, 34 end-of-life. 38 versions tracked.

Envoy releases quarterly, following a predictable 3-month cadence. As the data plane behind Istio and many other service meshes, Envoy's release schedule directly impacts the service mesh ecosystem.

Recommendation

Use the latest stable Envoy release, or let your service mesh (Istio, Consul Connect) manage the Envoy version for you. Don't run Envoy versions independently unless you have a specific reason.

Envoy Support Policy

Envoy supports the latest release with regular patches. Older versions may receive critical security fixes at the maintainers' discretion. In practice, the Envoy community strongly recommends staying on the latest quarterly release.

What You Need to Know

Envoy's xDS v3 API is the current standard. xDS v2 has been removed. Make sure your control plane uses v3.

WASM (WebAssembly) ABI for Envoy extensions is stable, letting you write custom filters in Rust, C++, or Go.

Envoy's version is usually managed by your service mesh. Check Istio/Consul compatibility matrices for version alignment.

Envoy 1.28+ includes significant HTTP/3 improvements and better connection pooling.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often does Envoy release new versions?
Envoy ships quarterly releases (roughly every 3 months). Patch releases come out as needed for security fixes. The quarterly cadence has been consistent since 2020.
Do I need to manage Envoy versions myself?
Usually no. If you're using Istio, Consul Connect, or another service mesh, the mesh manages the Envoy sidecar version. Only manage Envoy directly if you're using it as a standalone proxy or API gateway.
What is the xDS API?
xDS is Envoy's dynamic configuration API. It lets a control plane (like Istio) push configuration to Envoy sidecars without restarts. xDS v3 is the current version. If your tooling still uses xDS v2, it won't work with recent Envoy releases.
