HashiCorp Vault Support Policy

HashiCorp supports the current and previous minor release with security patches. Enterprise customers get longer support windows. Community users should stay on the latest or second-latest minor version.

What You Need to Know

Vault moved to BSL in August 2023. OpenBao (Linux Foundation) is the open-source fork.

Vault 1.15+ includes ACME protocol support for PKI, letting Vault act as an ACME certificate authority.

Vault's audit log should always be enabled in production. Without it, Vault will seal itself if it can't write audit entries.

Integrated storage (Raft) is now the recommended backend, replacing Consul as the default storage option.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I use Vault or OpenBao?
If BSL licensing doesn't affect you, Vault has more features and a larger ecosystem. If you need a strictly open-source solution, OpenBao is API-compatible with Vault and actively maintained by the Linux Foundation community.
How often does Vault release new versions?
Vault ships minor versions every 3-4 months with patch releases for security fixes as needed. Enterprise customers get extended support for older versions.
How do I upgrade Vault?
Vault supports rolling upgrades for HA clusters. Upgrade standby nodes first, then the active node. Always back up your storage backend, read the version-specific upgrade notes, and never skip more than one minor version at a time.
