Nomad Version History

3 active, 10 end-of-life. 13 versions tracked.

HashiCorp Nomad releases minor versions roughly every 3-4 months. Like other HashiCorp products, Nomad moved to the BSL license in August 2023. It's a workload orchestrator that handles containers, VMs, and standalone applications.

Recommendation

For new deployments, use Nomad 1.8+ if you're committed to the HashiCorp ecosystem. For container orchestration specifically, evaluate whether Kubernetes might be a better long-term choice given its larger ecosystem.

Nomad Support Policy

HashiCorp supports the current and previous minor release with security patches. Enterprise customers get extended support. Community users should stay on the latest or second-latest version.

What You Need to Know

Nomad uses the BSL license since August 2023. Evaluate whether this impacts your usage.

Nomad is simpler than Kubernetes but has a much smaller ecosystem and fewer third-party integrations.

Nomad 1.7+ includes native service mesh capabilities and improved Consul integration.

Nomad can orchestrate non-container workloads (Java JARs, binaries, VMs) alongside containers.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often does Nomad release new versions?
Nomad ships minor versions every 3-4 months with patch releases as needed. The cadence is similar to other HashiCorp products (Vault, Consul, Terraform).
Should I use Nomad or Kubernetes?
Nomad is simpler to operate and supports non-container workloads natively. Kubernetes has a vastly larger ecosystem, more cloud provider support, and better tooling. Choose Nomad if simplicity is your priority and you don't need the K8s ecosystem. Choose Kubernetes for everything else.
How do I upgrade Nomad?
Nomad supports rolling upgrades. Upgrade servers first (one at a time), then clients. Always back up your state before upgrading. Check the upgrade guide for any version-specific breaking changes.
