Traefik Support Policy

Traefik Labs supports the current major version with regular updates and the previous major version with critical security patches only. There's no formal LTS program. Enterprise customers (Traefik Enterprise) get extended support.

What You Need to Know

Traefik 2.x is in maintenance mode. Only critical security patches are being released.

Traefik 3.0 introduced Kubernetes Gateway API support as the recommended way to configure routing in K8s.

WASM (WebAssembly) middleware plugins in Traefik 3.x let you write custom middleware in any language that compiles to WASM.

If you're migrating from Traefik 2 to 3, the configuration format has breaking changes. Review the migration guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I migrate from Traefik 2 to Traefik 3?
The main breaking changes are in provider configuration and middleware naming. Use the official Traefik migration tool to detect incompatibilities. Key changes: IngressRoute CRD version updates, removed deprecated fields, and renamed middleware options. Test in staging first.
How often does Traefik release new versions?
Traefik ships minor versions every 2-3 months and patch releases as needed. The current major version (3.x) gets all new features. The previous major (2.x) gets only critical security patches.
Should I use Traefik or Nginx as a reverse proxy?
Traefik is the better choice if you're running containers and Kubernetes, thanks to its automatic service discovery and native Docker/K8s integration. Nginx is more battle-tested for traditional VM-based deployments. Both are excellent; pick the one that fits your infrastructure.
