About Node.js 16 LTS
Node.js 16 was the LTS release for 2021-2023, introducing V8 9.4, npm 8, and the Timers Promises API. It reached end of life in September 2023.
Key Changes in Node.js 16
- ●V8 9.4 with Array.at(), Object.hasOwn(), and Error.cause
- ●npm 8 shipped by default (previously npm 7)
- ●Timers Promises API (
await setTimeout()) for cleaner async timers - ●Stable AbortController for canceling async operations
- ●Experimental support for Corepack (package manager manager)
Breaking Changes
- ▲V8 version bump may affect native addon compatibility
- ▲npm 8 has different peer dependency behavior than npm 6
Node.js 16 reached end of life on September 11, 2023, roughly 2 years ago. Since then, no security patches have been issued. If you are still running Node.js 16, you should treat upgrading as a high-priority item. Any CVEs discovered against this version will not be fixed upstream.
The recommended upgrade path is to Node.js 24 LTS. Since Node.js 16 is 4 major versions behind, consider a staged upgrade through intermediate versions to catch breaking changes incrementally rather than all at once. Review the release notes for each intervening major version to identify API changes, deprecated features, and removed functionality that may affect your codebase.
