Rust Version History

1 active, 65 end-of-life. 66 versions tracked.

Rust ships a new stable release every 6 weeks, one of the fastest release cadences in the language ecosystem. Every 3 years, a new Edition is released (2015, 2018, 2021, 2024) that can include backward-incompatible changes gated behind an opt-in flag.

Recommendation

Always use the latest stable Rust release. Rust's backward compatibility guarantee means upgrades are virtually painless, and newer versions include critical performance and compilation speed improvements.

Rust Support Policy

Rust does not maintain older versions. Only the latest stable release receives bug fixes and security patches. The 6-week cycle means you're never more than 6 weeks from the next release. The nightly and beta channels are available for testing upcoming features.

What You Need to Know

Rust 2024 Edition shipped with Rust 1.85 (February 2025), bringing async closures, gen blocks, and refined lifetime capture rules.

Only the latest stable release is supported. There is no LTS or extended maintenance for older versions.

Rust's Minimum Supported Rust Version (MSRV) convention lets libraries specify the oldest compiler they guarantee works.

Compilation speed has improved dramatically: Rust 1.80+ compiles 20-30% faster than 1.70 for many projects.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often does Rust release new versions?
Rust ships a new stable release every 6 weeks. New editions (which can include breaking changes) are released every 3 years: 2015, 2018, 2021, and most recently 2024.
Do I need to upgrade Rust frequently?
Yes, but it's painless. Rust's strict backward compatibility guarantee means updating to the latest stable version almost never breaks your code. Just run 'rustup update' regularly. The only time you need to be thoughtful is when adopting a new Edition.
What is MSRV and why does it matter?
MSRV (Minimum Supported Rust Version) is a convention where libraries declare the oldest Rust compiler version they support. If you're on an older Rust version, check that your dependencies' MSRVs are compatible. Cargo supports MSRV-aware dependency resolution since Rust 1.73.
